Sahiwal Cattle

Sahiwal cattle is one of the best milch breed of tropical & sub tropical regions having high milk producing ability under harsh environmental conditions as well as resistant to ticks and tolerant towards heat. Due to its unique characteristics, it needs conservation as a pure bred. But the pure bred Sahiwal population is decreasing over the years due to change in agriculture system and crossbreeding. The pure bred population is also at danger point which is narrowing its genetic basis for any significant genetic improvement programme. Best way to conserve this breed is to be keeping it commercially viable under existing circumstances and to get high milk yield through genetic improvement. For this purpose, Research Centre for Conservation of Sahiwal Cattle was established at Jhang , Pakistan during 2003-04 with aim to conserve the Sahiwal breed through genetic improvement and management . Livestock Experiment Station, Jahangirabad district Khanewal is also under the administrative control of this centre as a Research Station.
